This panoramic view of the Shadowlake Village building site was taken before the start of construction, looking north-northwest. Construction began in May 2001. We clustered our development on 5 acres of the 33-acre property and left the rest as untouched as possible. You can see an aerial view (81K) of our land and its surroundings that was taken in February 2002. At that time our roadways and other infrastucture were barely finished and just a few homes had been built or even started. The photo is completely outdated with respect to our now built-out community, but it provides a comprehensive bird's-eye view of our site with its woods and meadows and of the surrounding area. Our 33-acre property borders on the 169-acre Brown Farm, now called Blacksburg Heritage Park. This is a public park that will mostly be left as a nature preserve. Thus, residents have immediate access to 200 acres of open space for recreational activities. Access to hiking trails in Jefferson National Forest is less than one mile away. As well as having exceptional natural features, our site is a mile from extensive commercial facilities including a supermarket, hotel, post office, banks, bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants, etc. This commercial center is located on Blacksburg Transit's bus route, providing access to many parts of town and even to the major shopping center in neighboring Christiansburg. Virginia Tech, a major research university, and downtown
Blacksburg are two miles away from Shadowlake Village.
The centrally located community garden and homes, and the edge of the woods. Blacksburg is a university town of about 40,000 population, including Virginia Tech's 25,000 students. The town is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of southwest Virginia, at 2000 feet above sea level, in Montgomery County, Virginia. Blacksburg has a relaxed small-town flavor with college-town amenities in the arts and local events. Shadowlake Village is about a 15-minute drive to Interstate 81. The town is located about 250 miles southwest of Washington DC. Opportunities for outdoor life are plentiful and of high quality, and range from the simple pleasures of walking the paved Huckleberry Trail to canoeing the New River, hiking in the nearby National Forest and Appalachian Trail, bicycling, jogging, and lots more. The September 2001 issue of Outside Magazine named Blacksburg as one of 10 dream places to live in the U.S. for people who love outdoor activities. Downtown Blacksburg is adjacent to the Virginia Tech campus and consists of several square blocks of restaurants, small shops, and the restored Lyric Theatre that shows good movies year round. Blacksburg has many Christian churches, a synagogue, a Moslem worship center, and other spiritual centers. Besides the downtown shops and the town's supermarkets, there are two health food stores, Asian groceries, and a thriving outdoor Farmer's Market every Wednesday and Saturday. Mall and big-store shopping can be found in nearby Christiansburg and 40 miles away in Roanoke, which is also where the nearest commercial airport is located, and in the city of Salem, 30 miles away on the way to Roanoke. There's a lot of live music here. Blacksburg and the surrounding area have a very active old-time music and dance scene with weekly old-time jams, a monthly mountain square dance with old-time bands, clogging and flatfooting, contra dances, and visiting musicians, and old-time and bluegrass weekends and competitions are held throughout the summer within 2 to 4 hours driving distance. Classical music concerts are presented during the academic year under the auspices of Virginia Tech, nearby Radford University, and other organizations, as well as in Roanoke, the nearest big city.
